Bulgaria’s exports in January – April 2023 up 3.6%, imports up 0.05% y/y


Bulgarian export to Ukraine grew by 200.4% in the period January-April 2023, reaching BGN 670.5 million, while for the same period in 2022 it was BGN 223.2 million. Export to Russia over the same period in 2023 was BGN 315.1 million compared to BGN 249.1 million in the first four months of 2022, an increase of 26.5%, shows preliminary data from the National Statistical Institute, published on Monday.

Import from Russia decreased by 52.6%, and that from Ukraine - by 9%.

Export of goods from Bulgaria to third countries for the period January-April 2023 increased by 13.3% compared to the same period of 2022 and amounted to BGN 10,851.6 million, while import of goods from third countries decreased by 7.9% and amounted to BGN 13,230.3 million.

The largest year-on-year growth of exports to third countries in the first four months of 2023 was recorded in the sectors "Machinery and transport equipment" (78.6%) and "Food and live animals" (38.9%). The largest decline was observed in the sector "Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials" (12.4%).

The largest increase in imports of goods from third countries was recorded in the sectors "Beverages and tobacco" (44%) and "Food and live animals" (27%). The largest decrease was observed in the sector "Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials" (30.1%).

The total export of goods to third countries and the EU amounted to BGN 29,811.1 million in the period January - April 2023, which is 3.6% more compared to the same period of 2022. The total value of imported goods from third countries and the EU is BGN 32,790.5 million, an increase of 0.05%.

Bulgaria's export of goods to the EU increased by 5.1% in January-March 2023 compared to the same period of 2022 and amounted to BGN 14,673.3 million, while the import of goods from the EU increased by 8.2% and reached BGN 14,959.9 million, according to preliminary data of the National Statistics Institute. In March 2023, Bulgaria's export to the EU decreased by 7.5% compared to March 2022 and amounted to BGN 5,090.9 million, while import increased by 3.8% and was worth BGN 5,488.4 million.

The highest growth in exports of goods to the EU compared to the same period of 2022 was recorded in the sector "Miscellaneous manufactured articles" (40.3%). The largest decrease was observed in the sector "Animal and vegetable oils, fats and waxes" (43.8%). The largest increase in imports of EU goods was recorded in the sector "Machinery and transport equipment" (29.9%), while the largest decrease was recorded in the sector "Mineral fuel, lubricants and related materials" (61.6%).
