Construction of a 15 km stretch of the Struma motorway from the Bulgarian town of Sandanski to Koulata on the Greek border was scheduled to start on 5 April 2012.
Work is proceeding after the 19 March signing of a BGN 56 million (about EUR 28 million) contract. The project is being financed by the European Union’s Cohesion Fund through the Operational Programme Transport.
The motorway is part of a larger project to complete the 150km motorway between Daskalov and Koulata. Greek company Aktor AD was chosen among 15 bidders. Barriers will be built between the motorway and towns along the route to reduce noise pollution.
The ground-breaking ceremony on 5 April was scheduled to be attended by Regional Development and Public Works Minister Lilyana Pavlova and Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski.
