Foreign direct investment in Bulgaria reached EUR 809.1 million at the end of February this year, preliminary Bulgarian National Bank data showed on April 17. The net flow of direct investment into the country rose by 87.4% compared with the same period of 2025.
By comparison, in the first two months of last year, the net flow of direct investment into Bulgaria was positive at EUR 431.7 million, or EUR 377.4 million less than the current result.
The amount of direct investment was equal to 0.7% of projected gross domestic product, against 0.4% of GDP in the same period last year.
In February alone, the net flow of investment into the country was positive at EUR 540.5 million, against a positive flow of EUR 184 million in the same month last year.
The data on the net flow of foreign direct investment into Bulgaria are preliminary and subject to revision, which may change the current result.
Equity capital, including cash and in-kind contributions by non-residents to or from the capital and reserves of Bulgarian companies, as well as proceeds from and payments on real estate deals in the country, was negative at EUR 26.7 million in January and February 2026. This was EUR 46.6 million lower than in January and February 2025, when it was positive at EUR 19.8 million.
The net flow of investment by foreign persons in real estate was negative at EUR 1.3 million, against a negative net flow of EUR 2.1 million in January and February 2025.
According to preliminary data, the net flow of direct investment abroad in January and February 2026 amounted to EUR 38.8 million, or 0.03% of GDP, against EUR 57.3 million, or 0.05% of GDP, in the same period of the previous year. In February 2026, the net flow was positive at EUR 25.3 million, against a negative value of EUR 42.8 million in February 2025.
The Bulgarian National Bank publishes monthly data on the net flow of direct investment for the respective month, covering all transactions carried out during the reporting period. The net flow is recorded in line with the principle of the original direction of investment.
