Bulgarian trade with EU in the period January - April 2020


In the period January - April 2020 the Bulgarian exports to the EU decreased by 5.1% compared to the same period of 2019 and amounted to BGN 11 700.7 Million while the imports from the EU dropped by 9.1% and reached 11 BGN 816.9 Million. Main trade partners of Bulgaria were Germany, Romania, Italy, Greece, Belgium and France which accounted for 70.7% of the exports to the EU Member States.

In April 2020 the exports to the EU decreased by 20.2% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year and amounted to BGN 2 432.3 Million, while the imports dropped by 32.4% and added up to BGN 2 295.5 Million.

In the period January - April 2020 in comparison to the corresponding period of the previous year the largest growth in the exports of Bulgaria to the EU distributed according to the Standard International Trade Classification was recorded in the sections "Beverages and tobacco" (42.3%) and "Animals and vegetable oils, fats and waxes" (42.3%). The most notable fall was observed in the section "Mineral fuel, lubricants and related materials" (27.8%).

Bulgarian imports from the EU in the period January - April 2020 decreased by 9.1% compared to the same period of 2019 and reached BGN 11 816.9 Million (at CIF prices). The largest amounts were reported for the goods imported from Germany, Romania, Italy, Greece, and the Netherlands.

In April 2020 the Bulgarian imports from the EU Member States dropped by 32.4% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year and amounted to BGN 2 295.5 Million.

In the period January - April 2020 compared to the corresponding period of 2019 the largest growth in the imports from the EU, distributed according to the Standard International Trade Classification, was reported in the section "Animals and vegetable oils, fats and waxes" (24.7%) while the most notable fall was observed in the section "Crude materials, inedible (except fuel)" (54.1%).

The foreign trade balance of Bulgaria (export FOB - import CIF) with the EU in the period January - April 2020 was negative and added up to BGN 116.2 Million.
