Bulgaria ranks among the top three EU countries in terms of bathing water quality

Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast offers the perfect conditions for a relaxing and enjoyable summer vacation

Bulgaria ranks third in the European Union in terms of bathing water quality. This is shown by data from the European Environment Agency for 2026, according to which 96.9% of the country’s bathing sites have excellent ratings.

Our country ranks immediately after Cyprus and Greece and ahead of a number of established European destinations such as Austria, Croatia, Italy, Portugal, and others. The European Union average is 84.8%, which places Bulgaria significantly above the overall average.

“As I have always maintained, the quality of the water and sand on our beaches is among the best in the world. “Don’t hesitate—come and enjoy a wonderful summer vacation on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast,” the Bulgarian Minister of Tourism Dr. Ilin Dimitrov said.

According to him, the published data is an important argument in favor of Bulgarian summer tourism because it provides a clear and verifiable assessment of the condition of the water at our country’s swimming areas. Minister Dimitrov said that such results are important not only for tourists but also for the industry, municipalities, and institutions working to develop the sector.

Data from the European Environment Agency show that Bulgaria is among the countries with the highest percentage of excellent ratings in the EU. Ahead of Bulgaria are Cyprus with 100% and Greece with 97.1%. Following Bulgaria are Austria with 96.5%, Croatia with 94.1%, Denmark with 92.4%, and Malta with 90.9%.
