Bulgarian Pepper Relish Granted EU Protected Geographical Status

Bulgaria’s Parvomayska lyutenitsa, a traditional local relish of tomatoes, peppers and spices, has entered the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications of the EU.

From now on, the “Lyutenitsa Parvomay” product will be only allowed to be manufactured in the Southern Bulgarian town of Parvomay.

The local type of lyutenitsa has been produced in Bulcons Parvomay for 60 years now.

Other local factories will be allowed to manufacture the product if they adhere to the technology designated by the European Commission.

Lyutenitsa has become the second Bulgarian product to be included by the European Commission in the Register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).

In 2012, Gornooryahovski Sudzhuk, a type of dry sausage, appeared in the register, too.
