The EU Emissions Trading System must ensure a competitive transition

In a letter to European Commission Executive Vice-President Ribera and Commissioner Hoekstra, Eurochambres calls for pragmatic adjustments to the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). European businesses are already struggling with high energy prices, rising carbon costs and an uneven global playing field, making it essential that the upcoming ETS revision better reflects industrial realities.

The chamber network urges EU policymakers to revise the linear reduction pathway, postpone the phase-out of free allowances and ensure realistic and viable ETS benchmarks. Equally important are stronger efforts to ensure a global level playing field and to provide businesses with the enabling conditions needed for a competitive transition, including access to affordable energy, faster permitting and adequate financing.
