The potential overall impact – direct and indirect – of the new US tariffs on reduced exports from Bulgaria is estimated at €626.9 million

“Our goal is to take concrete measures to support Bulgarian businesses so they can cope with the effects of the new trade conditions and preserve their positions on international markets.” This was stated by Minister of Economy and Industry Peter Dilov during a parliamentary hearing, in response to a question regarding the measures the Bulgarian government is undertaking to safeguard the stability and resilience of the national economy, with a view to ensuring the best protection of Bulgaria’s interests in the context of the new economic reality following the EU – US agreement.

The Minister of Economy pointed out that the potential overall impact – direct and indirect – of the new US tariffs on reduced exports from Bulgaria is estimated at €626.9 million, representing 1.46% of the country’s total goods exports.

Minister Dilov stressed that exports to the United States account for only 3.3% of Bulgaria’s total exports and around 7% of exports to third countries, suggesting that potential direct losses remain relatively limited.

At the same time, he explained, the new tariffs also have indirect effects on the Bulgarian economy, as a significant share of Bulgarian exports consist of intermediate goods used by other countries in production and subsequently re-exported to the US market.

Dilov underlined that the Ministry of Economy and Industry is already conducting a survey among affected companies to assess the impact of the situation, their prospects for positioning, and opportunities for development under the new conditions.

“In parallel, we are analysing the competitors of Bulgarian producers on the US market, in order to propose concrete support measures to businesses and to ensure the long-term resilience of Bulgarian exports,” he added.
