Bulgaria and Greece continue the project for the “Thessaloniki-Kavala-Alexandroupolis-Burgas-Varna-Ruse” railway corridor

The Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Rossen Jeliazkov and his Greek counterpart Konstantin Karamanlis have declared mutual interest in the continuation of the project for the creation of the Thessaloniki-Kavala-Alexandroupolis-Burgas-Varna-Rousse railway corridor. The two ministers participate in the Fourth Summit in Thessaloniki. The forum brings together representatives of governments and industry from the region and the world.

Minister Jeliazkov stressed that in 2019 the two countries have made progress in the negotiations on the multimodal corridor, while at the same time the Bulgarian side is proposing a meeting with the new composition of the Greek government.

In discussions about improving connectivity through infrastructure, Minister Jeliazkov pointed out that effective road links have been established between major cities in the region. According to him, at the same time, some railway sections are missing and existing routes need modernization.

Bulgaria is actively working to improve connectivity with neighboring countries, recalled Rossen Jeliazkov. "In addition to the ongoing construction of Struma Motorway, major infrastructure projects are the modernization of the railway and the road link with Serbia and the railway line to Northern Macedonia. Talks are ongoing with the Romanian side about the construction of a new bridge along the Danube," he said.

Minister Jeliazkov raised the issue of reducing the transit time at border crossings in the region. The use of a new generation of services to speed up transport processes was announced.
