Europe has been preoccupied with financial turmoil due to the global economic crisis and the current sovereign debt crisis in the Eurozone. The challenge now lies in how the EU can emerge stronger from the crisis by reinforcing its economic and monetary policies and by strengthening cooperation and integration among its member states.
On the EU enlargement front, ten countries from the region joined the EU in 2004 and 2007. Several others, especially from the western Balkans, are seeking to join.
It is within this context that The Economist Events have great pleasure in announcing the organization of a major EU–Balkan Summit in Sofia on October 17th-18th, 2013.
Without a doubt, the year 2013 is set to be pivotal for the Balkan region. All indications show that amid a vulnerable period of instability, the countries will find themselves at a turning point following the recent economic crisis.
Prime Ministers from the region, Cabinet Ministers, representatives from the European Commission, heads of financial institutions and organizations have been invited to take part in this summit to brainstorm and share insight with decision-makers from politics, business,finance and academia on EU Enlargement, leadership strategy for recovery and growth, while speakers will be encouraged to openly discuss and debate on the significant challenges and business opportunities that lie ahead for the region as a whole.
